Kabul unrest damaged Afghanistan’s reputation: UN

Violent demonstrations that rocked Kabul a week ago caused "immense" damage to the reputation of Afghanistan, the United Nations said as the army admitted the unrest had been a wake-up call.

What kind of reputation are we talking about? When the Taliban's regime was toppeled in 2001, alot of people thought that the dark days were over and the Afghan people will be able to live in a peaceful society. At that moment international donor agencies and countries promised a huge sum of money for the reconstruction projects throughout the war-torn country. Billions of dollars were donated and "spent" but after five years it is very difficult to see any kind of improvment in people's daily life. Only a small group of elite profited from the aid which was meant for Afghan people. The donor agencies and countries were aware of the situation but they didn't take any steps to improve the situation. Common man is now running out of patience and they don't trust the present setup in the country. Talibans are taking advantage of this situation and they have stepped up their attacks during the last couple of weeks resulting in a large number of casualties on both sides.

If the government is really sincere in helping to improve the livelihood of Afghan people, they have to take practical steps like jobs, health care, education, infrastructure etc. otherwise the situation will get worse and it will be difficult for Afghan governemnt and the US backed coalition forces to bring it under control.

Democracy that starts from the roots and travells upwards builds a peaceful and confident nation.
Democracy that starts from the top and is forced upon the people does not take root in society. Thats whats wrong in Afghanistan and Iraq. People are being forced to follow as system. Given time and effort by all to create an atmosphere which gives people confidence in the system and it leaders will bring peace to Afghanistan. Inshallah.
Taliban, will not have found home in Afghnaistan again had their not been sympathy fot them. A sympathy that is well-intentioned beacuse its goal is peace. But a sympathy that is none the less creating disruption and chaos for the ordinary Afghans. A governemtn that can only control Kabul cannot bring peace and prosperity to all of the country. Taliban and others, enemies and friends need to sit down draw up plans for peace. There is no other way.

True indeed … after all, you are all Afghanis less the Arabs and Paks in your MIDST. Those Coalition Forces are for sure temporary here until everything can pick-up all pieces together.

Thank you for your comment Becky. I am not an Afghan but a ‘Pak’ as you put it. What is abundantly obvious to so many of us, those who have had a little interest is history and world events, that another ‘Great Game’ is being played in Afghanistan. There was time when it was at peace with itself, and consequently properous. That was a longtime ago. A few years back you could see its properous past fading away into the horizon. Now its disappeared. Those born in the 80s cannot image the than Afghanistan. Those who have lived through it still dream of the days when it will return.

Much has gone on. Much has been destroyed. Peace is allusive. The horizon now dark. Pessimism resides.

But rembember how they threw out the Red Army. They will do it again, given time. Neither Pak not Indian nor Arab and for that matter, Becky, neither America nor Europe must interfere.

It is true, it past five years and the situations in Afghanistan are still worsen. The Donner countries spent a lot of Dollars but their is no effective promotion despite such a huge amount of expense. There are many factors for the causes:
    1. There is no control for the spending the money, no one know where the money go on? who is in charge for spending of the money? who report to whom about input and output of productive work and their result?
    2. There is no trust between NGO and governmental organization to do enough for infrastructure of the country.
    3. The government organization does not know about the classification of the necessary problems to spend the money for it efficiently. Because the scientific cadres aren’t enough in there, that’s why unnecessary worker hired in unnecessary posts.
    4. The system of the country is destroyed, they have no good banking system. There are bankruptcy, bribery, lying, inequality, weak moral and rubbery. These all grow up from weak justice in Afghanistan.
    5. These diseases in No. 4 all imported from Pakistan. Because Pakistan is the only country, who deteriorated every version of the system in Afghanistan in 23 years war in Afghanistan. Pakistan got a lot of advantages in political and economical dimensions during these years. Right now they do not want to see a blossom, prosperous and develop Afghanistan. That is why they interrupt the peace process, freedom and promotion in this country. If the world body really want to fight against terror, help with people of Afghanistan. They have to bring basically changes inside the government of Afghanistan as well as fundamental changes in the Pak-Afghan friendship. Thanks.
