Afghan soldiers ready to fight drug trade

Sixteen Afghan soldiers have graduated from a new training program at Fort Bliss, armed with knowledge on how to fly Russian-made helicopters in anti-drug missions over their war-torn country. The men will now make their final preparations to head back to Afghanistan, where they are expected to immediately get to work trying to halt the booming narcotics trade.

I'm not sure if these steps will help to reduce drugs' production in Afghanistan. There might be a slight political will on the side of government to fight drugs but alot of highly placed Afghan officials earn a fortune out of it. The policies made in Kabul will be very diffucult to implement in provinces since most of local commanders are earning their share from this lucrative business.

We can't ignore the fact that the livelihood of a large number of farmers, living in countryside, depends on cultivating and selling drugs. The incentives offered to these local farmers don't go far enough for them to switch from drugs to other agricultural products. Unless there is comprehensive plan and political will on the part of government to tackle this issue, I'm not optimistic that this problem will be solved in near future.

Do you think that there is a clear political will to slove this problem? Do you think that steps taken are enough to curb this issue? Or do you have any other idea to solve drug problematic?

Are the Afghans so ungreatful? I think not. But I am referring to those who fought in the war against the Russinas shoulder to shoulder with Pakistanis and other Muslim brethren and those whose entire generations grew up in Pakistan. Some though, and I mean the young who have no idea what it was like then, have been influenced by western propaganda. Shame.
Naser suggests reading Afghan history. Afghans can be proud of their history no doubt.I am glad that we have in Afghans Muslims of such courage and valour as was displayed in the war against Russians. But, it is also a fact that that Pakistan helped to turn the tide in favour of the Afghans when it entered the war to help the Afghan brethren. I know some of you won’t like it. But it is a fact. Remember, Pakistan also bought stringer missiles for the Mujahideen.
So please there is enough hatred in the world to last us a lifetime. Let not make it worse.
    Godbless Pak Afghan.

To get back to the question. The farmers need alternative source of income. Why is it that countires which willing brought ‘Democracy’ to Afghans are not willing to buy their products. I mean, give Afghanistan ‘most favoured nation’ status aloow them to export their products to western countires duty-free, offer the farmers realistic alternative with easy access to markets and they will stop produing narcotics. All they want, is what every human being wants - food and shlter for the family. Oh, and in this cenbtury, peace.

That was not my message, Naser.
I think you are playing a game on this site. Pretending to be angry and hateful. I just can’t believe one human being could hate another in a way your comments suggests you do.

Whatever the truth, Good Luck and Godbless.

People should not live by their past, (history) but should try to build the future gaining experience only from the past.(rightly or wrongly)

People can not eat their pride, that is why they have empty stomach. Pride is next to fight and fight is next to death. That happened to religious fanatics.

your country is beautiful and you people are suffering
However I cant understand the money that is spent on security. Surely this money could be spent providing the country with the infrastructure it needs.
your country is so old and should be well developed . You have spent many years fighting for your freedom. Please stop the fighting and get on with rebuilding your country.
You have a beautiful country and many people from around the world want to come and visit.
Women are also part of your country and can add to the prosperity of your country.they are the mothers of future generations.
they can aslo be well educated and an asset to your society.I am sure your intellegence and faith have all stemmed from your mothers.

First of all i want to ask who is Taliban? who is Alqaida?
sending more troops or not is not the solution,
Todays everyone knows about Taliban and etc.
    Poilitics are based on lie,
Every afghan is a Talib, but the question is who is real talib(terrorist)
concerning to the Drugs matter, may i ask Mr Paul why Afghan GOVMT and US forces are not able to Vanish the poppies ? this is clear that drugs actually produces MONEY and MONY is power and who want power? i hope everyone’s question would be answerd by this comments.
if the US governmet really want to finish the products of poppies in afghanistan then why they do not want to provide the waterwells and other facilities to those poor farmers to devolope thier aggriculture to produce the other things not the poppies. But actually this is not so easy to do.

I don’t understand the poppy problem. My solution would be to change the PH in the soil by crop dusting so it does not provide a suitable environment for growing poppies yet other crops would be able to be grown. That way it would stop the gunfighting over the fields since the fields would no longer support the poppy crop that is causing the problem. Then provide the Afghan people with seeds to grow another crop that would be suitable for the area.
